All applicants applying to the Geographic Information Systems, Geography - MS, or Geography MS/Thesis programs must submit a valid GRE general exam result or qualify for a GRE Waiver. To be considered for a GRE Waiver you must complete the form below and provide the requested supporting documentation through the Document Upload.

Please Note - The GRE has automatically been waived for master's applicants through 2026. Please do not complete this form if you are a master's applicant. All you need to do is submit a graduate application and the GRE requirement will automatically be waived.

GRE Waiver Request Criteria

Please select one or more of the following criteria for your waiver request.

A Bachelor’s or equivalent 4 year degree with at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA (or equivalent) from a nationally or internationally accredited college or university.

Five years or more of professional experience in a government agency, nonprofit entity, or private sector organization and a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) undergraduate upper division GPA (advanced standing or traditional students) from a nationally or internationally accredited college or university.

A completed Master's, J.D., M.D. or Ph.D. degree with a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher cumulative GPA (or equivalent) from a nationally or internationally accredited college or university.

Any earned or anticipated Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, with a 3.25 upper division GPA at time of application.

The GRE admission requirement will be waived for outstanding students who meet at least one of the criteria outlined below for demonstrating Success and Aptitude for Research plus at least one of the key criteria demonstrating Academic Preparation. These criteria are as follows:

For every box checked, a document must be uploaded. All documents must be translated to English.

Academic Preparation
Unofficial transcripts are required for each program checked.

Upper-division undergraduate GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) from a nationally or internationally accredited college or university.

Graduate GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) from a nationally or internationally accredited college or university.

Aptitude for Research

Undergraduate research-based thesis or independent research project conducted for at least one semester (e.g., FSU UROP program). *Course must be listed on Undergraduate Transcript.

Completed research-based graduate degree (i.e., resulting in a thesis or dissertation).

Extensive (at least 4 months) relevant professional research experience related to the applicant’s graduate training goals. *Must include e-email of employer for verification. Email cannot come from a personal email (Gmail, yahoo etc.)

Co-authored research paper published in a peer-reviewed ISI journal. *Journal must be found at this site and an ISSN must be provided or listed in CV: https://mjl.clarivate.com/home

Applicants will be contacted via e-mail with a decision on the waiver request after department review. Approval of the GRE Waiver Request does not guarantee admission to the program. Prospective students must still submit and complete a Graduate Application and meet all university and department admissions requirements to be considered for admission.
